In Soria Natural we are celebrating 40 years of working on natural health through medicinal plants and, in order to commemorate it, we have compiled 40 of our essentials. Take note!

1.- GARLIC

Allium sativum L.

It contains vitamins, mineral salts and sulfur compounds including aliin. It has hypocholesterolemic properties, since it inhibits cholesterol formation in the liver, as well as it has a hypotensive, blood thinner and cardioprotective effect. In Chinese traditional medicine, garlic is utilized in alcoholic extracts against intestinal worms.

2.- ARTICHOKE

Cynara scolymus L.

This plant is considered a great detoxifying. It contains cynarine, an active substance that enhances liver function and makes it an excellent hepatoprotective plant to preserve hepatic cells from the damaging effects of toxins and free radicals. Moreover, artichoke has a hypocholesterolemic activity by inhibiting cholesterol formation in the liver and easing its elimination with bile.

3.- ALFALFA

Medicago sativa

It is a very nutritive plant due to its content of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals. It is extremely useful for physical or intellectual exhaustion, in convalescences or as a vitamin and mineral supplement.

4.- CANARY GRASS

Phalaris canariensis

It is a cereal from the grasses family and it is remarkable for its nutritional characteristics: high protein and fiber content with iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese. It contributes to maintaining cholesterol and sugar levels in the body and acts as a good diuretic and depurative.

5.- GREEN ANISE

Pimpinella anisum L

Green anise improves digestion and helps to inhibit excessive gas formation. It can help a lot after large meals that cause bloated feelings and other digestive disorders.

6.- AMERICAN CRANBERRY

Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.

It has diuretic, urinary antiseptic and astringent properties. It is quite useful to treat and prevent urinary infections due to its content in proanthocyanidins, molecules that inhibit microorganism adhesion to urinary tract cells. Diuretic properties are due to the action of flavonoids and contribute to eliminating germs by urine.

7.- TEA TREE

Melaleuca alternifolia

The essential oil of tea tree has antiseptic, antifungal and antiparasitic properties. Very well-known to deal with lice, it also combats fungi and athlete’s foot. In addition, it contributes to avoiding infections and improves the healing of scars and superficial wounds.

8.- OAT

Avena sativa L.

It has balancer properties for the nervous system. Moreover, it is a highly nutritive plant that contains carbohydrates, proteins, unsaturated fats, vitamins, minerals and fiber, because of what it is useful for convalescences or students during exams periods.

9.- BITTER ORANGE

Citrus aurantium L.

Orange blossoms contain an aromatic essence that is said to have sedative properties. It is a plant highly utilized in cases of nervousness and insomnia.

10.- MILK THISTLE

Silybum marinum Gaertn

Popularly known as the liver guardian, its seeds contain silymarin, a mixture of components that stimulate liver cell regeneration when they have been damaged by drugs, toxins, alcohol, etc.

11.- HORSE CHESTNUT

Aesculus hippocastanum L

Due to its content in saponins, coumarins and tannins, the horse chestnut makes a positive effect on blood flow problems, particularly on varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

12.- HORSETAIL

Equisetum arvense L.

It is a plant that due to its content in flavonoids and mineral salts, (potassium, silicon, etc.) presents diuretic and depurative properties. In addition, due to its silicon richness, it stimulates collagen and elastic fibers regeneration, enhancing skin elasticity.

13.- SUNDEW

Drosera rotundifolia L.

Thanks to its bronchodilator action, it eases air entrance to the lungs. It is a highly utilized plant to relieve dry and irritative cough. It also fluidizes mucus and helps to expel them.

14.- ECHINACEA

Echinacea angustifolia DC

Known as the “natural antibiotic”, it is a plant that has a great stimulant capacity for the nervous system. It is utilized as a natural alternative in the treatment and prevention of infections in general, febrile states, flu, colds and swellings.

15.- SIBERIAN GINSENG

Eleutherococcus senticosus

Eleutherosides outstand among its components. It increases physical and intellectual performance. It is a general stimulant and activates the defensive capacity of the body.

16.- HAWTHORN

Crataegus oxyacantha L.

Its flowers and leaves are highly utilized to improve cardiocirculatory disorders since they help to normalize blood pressure and to improve blood flow. It is also known for its sedative properties, because of what it contributes to relieve those disorders related to anxiety.

17.- EUCALYPTUS

Eucalyptus globulus L.

It is one of the most effective plants known to treat respiratory diseases. It has respiratory antiseptic, soothing and expectorant properties, easing mucus ejection and relieving cough.

18.- EUPHRASIA

Euphrasia Officinalis L.

The infusion of this plant applied as nasal irrigations or as ocular washes, has anti-inflammatory, decongestant and astringent properties, because of what it relieves tearing and nasal discharge, that appear in allergies.

19.- GINKGO 

Ginkgo biloba L.

The joint action of all its components performs a beneficial effect on arterial, vein and capillary flow. Thanks to its neuroprotective action its use is recommended for brain function problems due to a lack of blood irrigation. In addition, by its antioxidant action, it protects neurons against the damage caused by free radicals.

20.- GINSENG

Panax ginseng

This plant is known since ancient times for its invigorating properties on the body. It is a stimulant of the nervous system and increases fatigue and stress resistance.

21.- MULLEIN

Verbascum Thapsus L.

The pectoral virtues of this plant were already known in Ancient Greece by Hippocrates and Dioscorides. It contains mucilages, which provide it an emollient action (smoothing tissues), saponins that enhance expectoration, and flavonoids that give it an anti-inflammatory effect.

22.- BLACK CURRANT

Ribes nigrum L.

It contains in its flavonoid leaves and essential oil that confer antiallergic and anti-inflammatory properties inhibiting histamine liberation. Traditionally, the leaves were rubbed on insect bites in order to relieve pain and swelling. It also has diuretic and purifying properties. Black currants also contain active substances that carry out an antioxidant and protective effect on blood flow.

23.- WITCH HAZEL

Hamamelis virginiana L.

Its leaves and its bark contain flavonoids and different types of tannins, quite interesting active compounds when treating different circulatory disorders (tired legs, hemorrhoids, varicose veins or capillary fragility).

24.- DEVIL’S CLAW

Harpagophytum procumbens DC

Devil’s claw, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, reduces and improves joint and muscle pain, and, therefore, it is very useful in case of blows, contusions or joint damage. It also helps to normalize cholesterol and uric acid levels in blood.

25.- SPEARMINT

Mentha spicata L.

Among the multiple spearmint properties, very well-known for its utilization against bad digestions and to treat respiratory problems, there is also the anthelmintic property. It is traditionally utilized in many parts of the world to help expel intestinal worms.

26.- PEPPERWORT

Lepidium latifolium L. 

It is a well-known plant for its diuretic properties. It helps in case of renal lithiasis, both to dissolve kidney stones and to prevent their formation. It also has a recognized anti-inflammatory action on the prostate. Pepperwort leaves can be bitten and help to strengthen the gums.

27.- GREATER PLANTAIN

Plantago major L.

Greater plantain leaves have been traditionally utilized for its soothing, anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties. The main constituent is mucilages, iridoids, phenolic acids, tannins and mineral salts. Due to its mucilage content, it helps to relieve cough and respiratory mucus irritation. It also helps to face skin irritation produced by excessive sunbathing.

28.- GERMAIN CHAMOMILE

Matricaria chamomilla L.

It enhances gastric juice secretion and eases digestion. It is utilized against nausea and vomits.

29.- GREEN NETTLE

Urtica dioica L. 

Green nettle leaves and stem outstand for their high content of chlorophyll, mineral salts, beta-carotenes, phenolic compounds and flavonoids. It has diuretic and depurative properties, among others. Moreover, it outstands since it is mineralizing and restorative, which makes it particularly interesting in case of asthenia and fatigue.

30.- PASSIONFLOWER

Passiflora incarnata L.

Passionflower flowers and leaves contain flavonoids, sterols, low indole alkaloid amounts and pectin. Passionflower active compounds have nervous system sedative properties, antispasmodic properties and muscle relaxant properties. It is utilized in case of nervousness, anxiety and sleep disorders.

31.- BLACK RADISH

Raphanus sativus L.

It contains a sulfate spicy-flavored essence, with choleretic properties, that is, it increases biliary liver production. Digestive properties are also attributed to it.

32.- ROSEMARY

Rosmarinus officinalis

An aromatic plant with very well-known revitalizing action that tones up the nervous system, quite beneficial in case of nervous fatigue, asthenia and convalescences. It is also useful for hepatic disorders due to its choleretic and cholagogue action.

33.- BUTCHER’S BROOM

Ruscus aculeatus L.

Butcher’s broom is a medicinal plant highly utilized to relieve aches caused by bad blood flow. It is considered the herbal remedy with the greatest action regarding these problems. Butcher’s broom roots and rhizome contain abundant saponins that, together with flavonoids, strengthen vein and capillary walls reducing swelling and edema.

34.- PURPLE LOOSESTRIFE

Lythrum salicaria L

Purple loosestrife, for its high tannin content, helps to relieve diarrhea. Mucilages apply a demulcent and anti-inflammatory effect that helps to soothe intestinal mucosa irritation.

35.- SAGE

Salvia officinalis L. 

With a Latin name that comes from “salvare”, also Latin and meaning “to save”, since it was believed that it could save from almost all diseases, sage is utilized to relieve flushing and perspiration, as well as, menopause disorders. It is also used for menstruation disorders. It tones up the nervous system and has an important digestive and antiperspirant action.

36.- SENNA

Cassia angustifolia Vahl

It has laxative properties. An infusion at night will stimulate intestinal motility the following morning, facilitating intestinal transit.

37.- GREEN TEA

Camellia sinensis

Apart from being one of the most consumed drinks, tea has stimulant and invigorating effects. It also has thinning, antioxidant and diuretic effects. It is a plant that has been traditionally utilized for physical and mental fatigue, asthenia, diarrhea and obesity.

38.- LINDEN

Tilia platyphyllos Scop 

This plant’s varied utilities are related to its sedative and relaxant effects. Hot water baths with a linden infusion have a relaxing effect. Useful to calm nervousness and anxiety states. It also enhances sleep due to its relaxant properties.

39.- THYME

Thymus vulgaris L

This aromatic plant contains essential oil to which it owes most of its effects: it is a defense stimulant since it enhances leukocyte action. It works as a relaxant on respiratory tract muscles, respiratory antiseptic and cough reliever.

40.- VALERIAN

Valeriana officinalis L.

The joint action of the different constituents of this plant (valepotriates and essential oil, mainly) lend it sedative properties.
