Why are dogs afraid of firecrackers and how can we help them stay calm?

San Juan festivities are near and although these are joyful days of celebration, for many dogs, the firecrackers and fireworks related to these festivities may be a source of stress and fear. There are two main reasons why this panic reaction occurs:

1. Sensitivity to noise: dogs have much more acute hearing than humans, so loud noises such as firecrackers may suddenly frighten them and cause a response of fear or anxiety.
2. Lack of familiarity: dogs do not usually hear the noise of firecrackers and fireworks, so it can be unfamiliar to them, and their reaction may be unforeseeable. 

In these situations, how can we help them calm down? 

• Do not leave them alone at home. Feeling alone in these situations will only increase and multiply their feelings of anxiety.
• Create a safe environment. Provide your dog with a quiet place where they can seek refuge in these cases. For instance, a quiet room away from foreign noises with the windows closed and the blinds lowered in order to soften noises and lightning. Their bed and favorite toys will be their best entertainment for those minutes.
• Keep yourself calm. Our emotions may influence our dogs, so it is quite relevant to convey a calm and relaxed attitude.
• Do not punish them. Avoid reprehending their attitude so that you do not increase their anxiety.
• Disguise noises with other sounds. You can play relaxing music, turn on the TV or radio, trying to soften the noise of firecrackers.
• If you can foresee the situation and it is time for a walk, remember to take him on a leash because he runs the risk of running out of control, with the consequences that this entails.
• Use sound therapy to make your dog familiar with these sounds. Try to get them used to these noises since they are young by playing recordings of firecrackers and fireworks at a low volume and making them associate these with something nice, such as treats or games. You can gradually increase the volume to help your dog get over this fear.
• If your dog’s fear of firecrackers is extreme, do not hesitate to contact a professional to help you redirect his behavior.
