LARGE CRANBERRY

Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton

Description

A shrub of the Ericaceae family, it grows spontaneously in the wetlands of the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. It is also known as cranberry (craneberry = crane berry, from which it derived cranberry) because of the similarity of its flowers, pink, with the style and stamens fully exposed and pointing forward, with the neck, head and beak of the crane.

The branches are thin, about 10 cm or less, and the leaves are small and evergreen. The fruit, edible and sweet and sour tasting, is a berry larger than the leaves, white at first and deep red when ripe.

Part used

Fresh or dried ripe fruit.
